The truth about life requires that you are either “Hopeful” or “Expectant”. The two words are usually used interchangeably, but both describe beliefs about the future in different ways.
During the week, I asked a group of folks to tell me which of the two words has the maximum impact - to be “Hopeful“ or “Expectant”? Surprisingly, everyone said being hopeful makes more impact than being expectant. Being hopeful makes a better impact on them.
Hope is a desire for an outcome, a wish enveloped in uncertainties about what will actually transpire. Hope doesn’t require certainty, even when the odds are staked against you. But expectation is a strong belief that something will happen in a certain way.
Unlike “Hope”, expectation is attached to a definite outcome. People generally cling to expectations and hold loosely to hopes. Each of the two is fraught with risks. Are you hopeful or expectant?
Let's go deeper. A pregnant woman is never hoping she will deliver her baby at the 9th month. That’s why they are not called “Hopeful Mothers”. Instead, they are called ”Expectant Mothers” because they have a definite outcome in mind. They already fixed their mind on a 9th-month outcome - the birth of a baby.
The key difference between being “Hopeful” and being “Expectant” is the level of attachment to the outcome. When you have an expectation, you are not basing your emotions on whether the outcome will come or not. Hope doesn’t work that way. To get quick results, you must upgrade from being “hopeful” to being “Expectant”. It’s the climax of all desires that get stuff sorted - Yeah!
Here is the deal: Hope risksly dances with uncertainty. But Mr Expectation arrogantly confronts uncertainty with zero tolerance. TYC
